Ventotene Lentils
The lentils of Ventotene, which are strictly hand cultivated, are the main product of the island of Ventotene.
They are small, light brown with light pinkish veins, sometimes green or greenish yellow. Grown on the island since the second half of the 18th century, they have been included in the list of Lazio's traditional agri-food products since 2002.
Depending on the soil in which they are cultivated, which is either sandy or clayey, sowing is carried out from December/January until February/March. When spring arrives, the flowering lentils release a scent into the air that envelops the entire island.
The lentils are rich in iron owing to the volcanic origin of the soil and have an unmistakable taste and texture. To be savoured in the traditional Ventotene-style lentil soup recipe.
