The Towers
Come discover our fascinating coastal defences: Torre Astura, Torre Foce Verde, Torre di Fogliano, the ruins of Torre di Rio Martino and Torre Paola.
Torre di Foce Verde was created between 1660 and 1667 by the Caetani family by order of the apostolic chamber. Its purpose? Staunchly protect the beautiful Roman coastline.
A few kilometres to the south, a pearl called Torre di Fogliano rises up above the golden beach of the Rio Martino canal. Together with the majestic Torre di Rio Martino, these structures integrated the coastal defence, providing security between Torre Astura and Torre Paola, positioned on the striking Circeo promontory. However, unlike the others, these heroic towers did not survive the tragedies of World War II and succumbed under the German bombings.
Continuing south, you will come across the Torre Paola, built back in 1563 on the commission of Pope Pius IV, thanks to the work of the lords of Sermoneta. This tower towers majestically over the promontory, watching over the enchanting cove and the mouth of the effluent canal of the lake Lago di Paola.
Its building was a heroic undertaking, punctuated by the raids of the dreaded Saracen pirates. Despite the challenges and difficulties, Torre Paola has preserved its original beauty, completing the defensive system that protected the road to Rome. Its name derives from the nearby church of San Paolo.
The Paola Tower, positioned at the foot of Mount Cercello, reveals a splendid panorama towards the west and embraces with its gaze the wonderful beach of Caprolace, Fogliano, Foce Verde and Astura.
Come explore and enjoy this stretch of earthly paradise.
