Torre Paola (Paola Tower)

Torre Paola is a jewel located in Sabaudia which still stands proudly in its original structure.

Torre Paola, together with its companion Torre Fico, was among the first to rise on the Promontory of Circeo, creating an insurmountable line of protection. Its strategic and dominant position over the cove and mouth of Lago di Paola effluent canal was chosen by the order of Pope Pius IV in 1563. In fact, at that time the tower, built by the lords of Sermoneta and San Felice, was intended to defend this land from the raids of the dreaded Saracen pirates.

The tower surely takes its name from the ancient Church of San Paolo, located nearby.

Over the years, Torre Paola came under numerous attacks, but bravely resisted. Her walls saw the Turks, the French and the British land on the beach below, but she still stands. She is a beacon of resilience.

During World War II, the Italian Navy commandeered this tower for military purposes from its owner, Louis Aguet. At the end of the conflict, the Navy tried to buy it, but Baroness Blanc, Aguet's heir, refuses the offer. The building then passed into the hands of Monsignor Di Paola, the parish priest of the church of Saint Mary of the Angels in Rome. And, still today, this beautiful tower is owned by the Monsignor's family.

When you see Torre Paola, you will be immersed in an atmosphere full of stories and adventures. You will walk on the same stones that have seen the passage of centuries and have the opportunity to appreciate all their architectural beauty.
