The Roman Harbour
The Roman Harbour is a must for those who come on vacation to Ventotene.
During the era of ancient Rome, in the transitional period between the Republic and the Empire, skilled craftsmen passionately dug into the heart of the tuffaceous rock, opening up spaces that plunged directly into the crystal-clear waters of the sea. They removed as much as 60,000 cubic meters of material, creating a deep basin that plunges down to three meters below sea level. Completely surrounded by the majesty of the rocks, the result is a harbour perfectly protected from the whims of winds and currents, a safe haven for the merchant ships of the time.
One of the most striking features of the Roman Harbour are the imposing arches carved into the rock on your right, a testament to Roman ingenuity. On the other side a perimeter, which is likewise formed of tufa rock protects the harbor from the sea. Look toward the mouth of the harbour, facing East, and you will clearly notice a cavity with an opening at the top, which once contained chains used to close the harbour in case of danger or rough seas. In front of you stretches the Pozzillo (little well), a structure built to calm the undertow and an ideal place for boats to land. Between the mouth of the harbour, the fishpond and the Pozzillo, you will find three bollards dug directly into the tuffaceous rock, used by the Romans to moor ships.
Today the Roman Harbour is still the beating heart of local fishermen and small boats. Here you will discover an authentic atmosphere, where time seems to flow at a slower pace. In the evening, when the soft lights create an intimate and romantic atmosphere, it is revealed in all its beauty. Don't miss the chance to enjoy a spectacular view of the sea, a panorama that will leave you speechless. And if you wish to delight your palate, you will have no trouble finding cozy little restaurants nearby where you can enjoy local delicacies.
