The Medieval Museum of Fossanova
In the ancient Cistercian guest quarters of the Abbey of Fossanova, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself completely in 13th century life, in a setting that preserves its sober architectural linearity intact, but at the same time stands out as a courtly and majestic place. It is here that you will find the Medieval Museum of Fossanova, in the town of Priverno.
Your journey through the museum begins with the second act of the history of Privernum, when the brave citizens of Priverno in the early Middle Ages began to shape this place and transformed what was once a Roman town into a new city, known today as Piperno. This is a page of history that has recently been rediscovered thanks to the excavations in the Archaeological area but is already full of many hidden treasures, ready to be discovered and admired through a wide range of materials that have been collected and exhibited in our Museum.
Pottery coming from everyday life, found in tombs, reveal the new funerary customs, linked to the Christian rite, that began to emerge in the 6th century. Here you will discover how the dead were buried within the city walls and how ancient Roman houses were transformed into burial chambers. However, these houses were still inhabited, and so, alongside memory places, ancient kitchens and the characteristic 'butti', the medieval wells, have re-emerged, which have yielded an incredible variety of jugs, glasses, plates as well as the remains of the meals of yesteryear.
Don't miss the opportunity to step back in time to the Middle Ages, it is a truly unique opportunity.
